Service Overview

Structural Steel done properly.

Structural steel is what makes modern open-plan Sydney homes possible. Wide sliding doors, upper-floor cantilevers, garage headers and long living-area spans all rely on steel beams and columns doing the work that timber can't. When steel is right, it disappears — when it's wrong, doors bind, floors bounce, and cracks appear in the plaster.

Our team erects structural steel across residential and commercial projects — PFC and UB beams, universal columns, portal frames, steel-framed carports and steel-and-timber hybrids. We coordinate with fabricators, engineers and crane crews so the steel arrives correct, lifts in safely and sits plumb and level for the trades to follow.

Why this service matters

Steel does structural work that timber physically can't. Getting it in level, plumb and correctly connected is the difference between a stable, quiet home and one that flexes, drops and cracks over time.

When homeowners and builders need it

Steel typically goes in at structural stage — under first floors, over large openings, or as part of a portal frame in extensions and new builds. Renovations often need steel installed after existing walls are propped and demolished.

Choosing a contractor

Common mistakes we help clients avoid.

  • Ordering steel before final measurements are taken from the actual slab or existing structure.
  • Not confirming crane access and rigging early — steel arrives and can't be lifted safely.
  • Poor bearing detail where steel sits on brickwork or existing structure.
  • Skipping galvanising or paint spec on steel that will be exposed to weather.
  • Attempting to install heavy beams without proper propping and rigging.
Why experience matters

The benefits of hiring experienced carpenters.

  • Beams and columns installed plumb, level and to engineer certification.
  • Correct bearing pads and connections at every support point.
  • Safe lifting and rigging with the right equipment for each piece.
  • Steel that integrates cleanly with the surrounding timber framing.
Our Approach

How Platinum Carpentry Group completes this service.

We start by taking off the engineer's steel schedule, checking site dimensions, and coordinating with a trusted fabricator so pieces arrive labelled and to size. Access and crane requirements are confirmed before delivery. Propping is installed for any beams replacing load-bearing walls. Steel is lifted, positioned, plumbed and bolted or welded per spec. Timber framing is then built off the steel with correct packers and connections.

Structural steel differs from timber framing because tolerances are tighter, weights are higher, and lifting is more dangerous. It sits at the intersection of carpentry, engineering and rigging, and needs a crew that respects all three.

Materials, methods and workmanship

  • PFC, UB and UC beams sized to engineering specification
  • Universal columns and hollow section posts
  • Portal frame construction for garages, sheds and open-plan spaces
  • Galvanised or paint-finished steel for exposed applications
  • Correct bolted, welded and bracket connections per engineer detail

Why Choose Us

Why Choose Platinum Carpentry Group for structural steel.

Steel and carpentry under one team

The crew installing your beams also builds the frame around them — no coordination gaps.

Correct rigging and lift planning

Steel arrives, is lifted safely, and is installed plumb — no near misses or damaged goods.

Engineer-certified installs

Connections, bolts and welds installed to spec so certification is signed off without rework.

Renovation experience

We install steel into existing homes safely with correct propping and minimal disruption.

Our Process

A clear, organised process from enquiry to completion.

01

Initial enquiry

Share plans, engineering and site address — we scope the steel package.

02

Site inspection

We check crane access, existing structure, propping requirements and delivery route.

03

Quotation

Fixed price covering fabrication coordination, delivery, crane, install and connections.

04

Planning

Steel scheduled with fabricator, crane booked, propping and traffic control organised.

05

Installation

Steel lifted, positioned, plumbed, bolted and connected to spec — safely and quickly.

06

Quality inspection

Every beam and connection checked against engineer detail before framing continues.

07

Hand-over

Steel signed off and ready for the framing crew to build off.

Common Problems We Solve

Genuine issues clients bring to us — and how we solve them.

Steel that doesn't fit on delivery

We measure from site before ordering so fabrication is right the first time.

Beams that sag under load

Correct engineering, sizing and camber prevent visible deflection later.

Cracking above steel beams

Correct bearing detail and packers eliminate movement that shows up in plaster.

Corrosion on exposed steel

Correct finish — hot-dip gal or paint system — spec'd for the exposure.

Professional Standards

Benefits of Professional Carpentry.

Professionally installed structural steel opens up your home safely and legally, holds its structural integrity for the life of the building, and passes engineer and certifier sign-off without callbacks. Cutting corners on steel is one of the most dangerous decisions in construction — it's a load-bearing element that has to be right.

Our team is fully licensed in NSW (Licence 295229C), insured, and delivers every project to the National Construction Code and relevant Australian Standards. Structural integrity, weatherproofing and compliance aren't extras — they're the baseline we work to on every Sydney site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about structural steel.

How long does structural steel installation take?

Steel installs are usually quick once the site is prepped. A typical residential job — three to six beams and a few columns — can be lifted in and connected in a single day, sometimes two if crane access is difficult. Larger portal frames or multi-beam projects on custom homes can take three to five days. The lead time is usually the fabrication, not the install — steel typically takes two to four weeks to fabricate depending on the fabricator's workload. We give you a firm date once the fabricator confirms, and we work back from there to make sure the site is ready.

Do I need an engineer to spec steel for my home?

Yes, always. Every piece of structural steel in a residential or commercial project must be sized and detailed by a qualified structural engineer, and the connections certified. This isn't a place for guesswork — the engineer's calculations account for spans, loads, deflection limits and connections. If you don't have an engineer, we can recommend engineers we work with regularly across Sydney. They'll produce the drawings and schedule, and we install exactly to spec so the certifier can sign off without issues at frame stage.

Can steel be installed while I'm living in the house?

Yes, and it's common on renovations. We prop existing structure carefully, remove the section of wall that needs to come out, lift the steel in and connect it, then remove the props. During the actual lift, the immediate area needs to be clear for safety, but the rest of the home stays functional. We manage dust, noise and access carefully and complete the install in the shortest possible window. If crane access is difficult, we may use split beams or an alternative rigging approach so we don't need to close streets or move fences.

How much does structural steel cost?

Steel is quoted by piece — beam size, length, connections and finish all affect the price, plus fabrication and installation. A single PFC beam over a garage opening might sit in the low thousands installed, while a full portal frame or a complex multi-beam install in a large home can easily reach five figures. Crane hire and traffic control add to the cost where they're needed. We provide fully itemised quotes so you can see the fabrication, delivery, crane and install broken out separately, and we're honest about where steel can be sized down or where it can't.
